Backstory: Hellfarch comes from a world once dominated by a pantheon of gods who ruled over the mortals inhabiting it. Only Hellfarch himself knows his true origins, but the earliest mention of him in history describes him as a horrible demon who appeared seemingly out of nowhere millennia ago. Virtually immortal and gifted with extremely powerful magic, he single-handedly laid siege to his homeworld, gaining control over entire kingdoms in a plot to rule the world. His goal was to eradicate the gods from existence by cutting them off from their worshipers, so the gods retaliated by choosing a ragtag bunch of misfits to rise up and become heroes of the land. Their quest led them to find a small wooden box, said to have the power to seal the demon away for eternity. They stormed his palace and managed to seal Hellfarch away, bringing peace and the gods' rule back to the land.
However, Hellfarch could not be sealed forever. Every thousand years, his power would grow strong enough to influence the outside world and manipulate someone into freeing him, only for him to ultimately and eventually rather quickly get sealed back into the box by a new group of misfit heroes chosen by the gods. No matter how hard Hellfarch overwhelmed the heroes with his power, they would always counter it, either with some artifact they aqcuired on their journey or through an act of the gods disguised as the power of love and friendship. After several failed attempts at regaining control over the world before getting sealed away yet again, Hellfarch spent the final millennium in confinement concocting an insidious plan. When he was released yet again, his immense presence looming over the umpteenth group of heroes chosen by the gods to defeat him, he wasted no time in setting his plan in motion:
He teleported away from the heroes and never came back.
In fact, Hellfarch had spent his time sealed away to devise a new kind of magic, one that neither he nor the gods had ever attempted before, and he unleashed it for the first time. The incredibly powerful spell created a rift in space that allowed Hellfarch to escape into another dimension altogether, one similar to his own but without any divine entities ruling over it. Finally able to last five minutes before being sealed away again, Hellfarch decided to put his plans for world domination on hold until he could figure out how to keep it that way. In this new world, he found himself in the modern era, and with his goals for conquest on hiatus, he became incredibly curious about the advanced technology all around him. He learned all that he could about what this godless world was like, meeting several people along the way.
Meanwhile, the gods were infuriated at Hellfarch's escape from the world under their control, mortified at the idea that mortals could do the same and discover that there are worlds outside of their influence. They created an assortment of monsters and flung them into the world Hellfarch had escaped into in hopes of killing him or drawing him out. Hellfarch, after discovering a comic book store, grew inspired to become a superhero and fight off the monsters, though his temper and nigh-nonexistent morals ended up making him cause more damage than anything. Throughout it, however, he caught glimpses of genuine kindness and altruism from those around him, reawakening long dormant feelings of comion and empathy that he had attempted to cast aside when he initially began his world conquest.
Eventually, Hellfarch grew to care for those around him, and dropped his ambition for world domination altogether. However, he retained a lust for power and his original desire to eradicate the gods of his home dimension, and he searched for ways to do so without violating his newfound (albeit still fairly loose) moral com. Meanwhile, the gods grew frustrated at Hellfarch's ability to dispatch their monsters. They tried sending heroes after him to seal him up again, but his new, cunning strategy of simply teleporting the chosen heroes away before they could get close proved too effective for them to overcome. In addition, the magical rift created when Hellfarch jumped dimensions caused other magic s to discover how to do it for themselves, and the gods found themselves losing worshipers as their lies of being the supreme beings of all universes began to unravel. In a desperate attempt to rid themselves of the threats to their superiority, the gods banded together and sent one of their own the the modern dimension in a titanic, godly form. They intended to both crush Hellfarch and take over a new mortal world in the process.
Hellfarch retaliated, however, using his conviction to protect his new friends to best the god in combat and not only defeat him, but steal the god's power to use as his own. The gods, terrified at the even bigger threat Hellfarch now posed, attempted to eradicate him once and for all. Using their godly powers to their absolute fullest, they managed to make a tear in existence itself and fling him through it, effectively jettisoning him outside of reality. No longer existing in a physical dimension governed by the laws of reality, Hellfarch nearly lost all concept of himself, but the millennia he had spent sealed away and trapped in a similar state of nigh-nonexistence gave him the mental fortitude to hold onto his identity even as the insanity of existing outside of existence shook him to his core.
Time went by, but outside of reality, time wasn't a concept that existed. For Hellfarch it did, however. He introduced it, along with the idea of space, and having a body, and understanding what the heck was going on. As it turned out, because Hellfarch was able to have the concept of his own existence survive being outside of reality, it began to bend to his will. If he wanted something, it would happen, as this space outside of reality had no rules to dictate that someone simply wanting something isn't enough to make it happen. Hellfarch wanted to go back into reality, but still keep this ability to bend it completely to his will. The outside of reality complied and he returned, able to make anything he could think of happen by merely willing it.
Now effectively omnipotent, Hellfarch effortlessly dispatched the gods, condemning them to live out the rest of their now-finite lives as mortals. Having accomplished his extremely long life's goal all but instantaneously by simply wishing it, the reformed demon found himself at a sudden loss for what to do next.
So he decided to take over the world anyway.
With just as little effort as it took to dethrone the pantheon of gods who had ruled over his world for eons, Hellfarch had every mortal in both dimensions bowing to him, their free will overwritten by the will to serve him. Anything he wanted would be granted to him, whether it be through his powers immediately and without any price or through his followers perfectly and without dissent. It quickly grew difficult for him to think of things to desire, aside from something to alleviate the growing, maddening boredom that began to eat at him. He found himself staring into space, only to snap out of it and discover that centuries had ed. It became apparent that the only thing his newfound control over reality wouldn't allow was for him to alter his own mind, to remove his concept of boredom altogether. He began to question his existence, his sense of self threatening to dissolve back into the chaos of the space outside of reality. It was as if it was attempting to reclaim his existence and eradicate him once and for all.
For the sake of self-preservation, Hellfarch decided to undo his takeover of the earth, rewinding time back to the point just after he defeated the gods, and to forfeit some of his omnipotence in order to make things more interesting. He limited his body so that it required eat and sleep on a regular basis, keeping his sense of time from slipping away from him too quickly. He would combat his boredom with games, countering the absolute freedom from beyond reality with rules and limitations of his own making.
Now with all of reality as his playground, Hellfarch does whatever he feels like to keep himself entertained, from creating elaborate games to play with unwitting bystanders to creating a floating city and running it like a theme park to moving into a suburban home just to mess with the neighborhood's draconian HOA. Wherever he goes he touts himself as a mad, sadistic demon, dominating those around him but secretly holding to his morality and stealthily leaving a positive impact where he can.
Yes I updated Hellfarch's ref sheet yet again but it's been over three years this time, and I feel like this update was well worth it! Compared to the previous reference, his body is still the same shade of purple but I rendered it with actual proper lighting this time around so it appears brighter but that's just how he normally should look. The spirals in his eyes are thicker so they still render properly at far distances from the camera and his pupils are a little bigger as well. His musculature is cleaned up some more, especially in the legs, he has real and glorious eyebrows instead of weird flesh lumps above his eyes, his horns are thicker, his toes are shorter and he has fewer but thicker and more menacing teeth. His harness now properly accentuates his chest rather than dangling loosly down to his torso and the ring has stylish clips to attach it to the straps. He has gone back to wearing a kilt+loincloth combo (albeit with a shortened version of his undies underneath for modesty), with the front and back trimmed for style and easier rigging, and his arm and leg cuffs are now spirals instead of solid bands. And while none of it is visible in the final render, his rig has undergone overhaul after overhaul and due to the crazy amount I've learned from my job over the past year it now has some really cool features that make posing and animating him far quicker and easier than it's ever been before.
There is no art reference this time around because it is now integrated into the character sheet! I've decided not to separate them anymore as it is annoying to maintain 2+ separate s and I think I managed to fit everything in a single large sheet just fine. Plus I think it makes it more fun to look at and read through, as I can include extra bits of lore and trivia next to the technical references which I always enjoy when looking at others' refsheets.
